Pinched Nerve

Treatment for Pinched Nerves from our San Antonio Chiropractor

A pinched nerve is a term used to describe symptoms caused by excessive pressure being placed on a nerve. This pressure interferes with the function of the nerve, causing symptoms such as pain and numbness. Pinched nerves can happen throughout the body, and treatment from our San Antonio chiropractor here at Optimal Health & Wellness Center is a good way to treat your pinched nerves.

Why Pinched Nerves Occur

There are a number of reasons that pinched nerves may occur:

  • Overuse
  • Trauma
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Poor posture
  • Obesity

Carpal tunnel is a type of pinched nerve that occurs in the wrist. It is usually associated with overuse injuries, such as having a job where a lot of typing or other repetitive hand movement is required. Sciatica is a pinched nerve in the lower back, which is more commonly associated with poor posture and obesity.

What are the Symptoms of a Pinched Nerve?

Pinched nerves may cause a variety of symptoms:

  • Pain
  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Muscle weakness
  • Pins-and-needles/fallen asleep sensation

Usually, the pain associated with pinched nerves is burning and radiates outward. People have variable degrees of the other symptoms, ranging from extreme muscle weakness and complete numbness to minor tingling. Not all pinched nerves are painful.

Chiropractic Treatment for Pinched Nerves

Because pinched nerves are the result of abnormal pressure on a nerve, the only way to truly relieve them is to remove that pressure. In most cases, the pressure on the nerve is caused by some other part of the body not being where it should be, or being inflamed or too tight. If the vertebrae are out of alignment in the lower back, for example, pressure can be placed on that nerve, causing the symptoms of sciatica.

Chiropractic care for pinched nerves includes a variety of options, many of which can be used together:

  • Spinal adjustments
  • Spinal decompression
  • Corrective exercises
  • Electrical muscle stimulation
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Rest
  • Lifestyle adjustments

The hands-on work such as spinal manipulation is used to help return tissues to their normal position. However, additional therapies will be prescribed by our chiropractor in most cases in order to prevent the problem from recurring. Things like corrective exercises to help strengthen weak muscles and lifestyle adjustment counseling to help you avoid poor ergonomics support the in-office care you will receive. If you are overweight and that may be contributing to the problem, we can help you get started on a successful weight loss plan, as well.
